The Call for Clean Water
The Missing Salmon Alliance stand alongside 15,000 people who marched for clean water on the streets of London last Sunday 3rd November. The event was a crucial opportunity for our community to raise its voice for fish and biodiversity, and a stark reminder for the government of the protection needed for our waterways.
In tandem with our call for cold, clean water, the Missing Salmon Alliance ask the government to ensure that the Special Measures Bill holds polluters to account, that the government prioritises its biodiversity targets, and that it fast tracks it’s Salmon Action Plan. Each measure is essential to restoring balance in ecosystems where overfishing, pollution, and warming waters have put intense pressure on populations of wild Atlantic salmon. Ensuring the measures are put in place is critical to preventing the further decline of this species.
In a sea of dressed-in-blue supporters, MSA Members were among those marching on Sunday.
Speaking to the crowd, Penny Gane, Head of Practice at Fish Legal said “No more excuses, no more delay. We think that every single river should be protected from pollution. Not just the big ones, but every river and small stream across the country that has been degraded and ignored. We think that #EveryRiverCounts.”
The unified call for clean water underscores a critical issue for our wildlife and biodiversity. Together with the citizens, scientists, and activists who took to the streets on Sunday, the Missing Salmon Alliance remind the government of its duty to safeguard these ecosystems, reduce the effects of pollution, habitat loss, and climate change, so that species like our wild Atlantic salmon can thrive.
