The Likely Suspect Framework for Atlantic Salmon: a review of current research project activity

The Likely Suspects Framework for Atlantic salmon is a collaborative international research project being led by a group of UK salmon conservation organisations https://missingsalmonalliance.org/lsf-further-research , aiming to quantify the drivers of salmon mortality across their life cycle and improve conservation practices. We are conducting a review of current and planned Atlantic salmon research activity to provide focus and identify knowledge gaps.

If you are involved in a research project (current or planned) on wild Atlantic salmon , or where salmon relevant research may comprise a component of a bigger project , or feature in a work package , then we’d really like to hear from you. We’d be extremely grateful if you could take 10 minutes to complete and submit this simple form (link below) to ensure that your work is included in this process.

Our ambitious project is focused on understanding the processes controlling wild salmon Atlantic survival to build useful resources to share amongst the international salmon management community. We would like to capture summary information from current and planned research projects that involve wild Atlantic to add to existing inventories and help us to connect people, and identify future research needs. This can help us to address important science questions and improve our combined conservation efforts. If you are leading , or involved in a research project involving wild Atlantic salmon then we’d really like to hear from you.

Our Letter to You

Dear Researcher

The Likely Suspects Framework for Atlantic salmon is a collaborative international research project being led by a group of UK salmon conservation organisations https://missingsalmonalliance.org/lsf-further-research .

Drawing on existing data resources from a multitude of sources, the project will attempt to describe the mechanisms behind changes in the Atlantic salmon’s ecosystem at key points in the life cycle where survival fluctuates. By interrogating the mechanisms influencing salmon stocks in the past, we can begin to understand current and future drivers of change and make the changes necessary to protect wild salmon

As part of a planning exercise we are undertaking a review of current, and planned, research activity on wild Atlantic salmon, and their ecosystems. Summary research project information, will be used to build on the comprehensive inventory of salmon marine research coordinated and maintained by NASCO (https://salmonatsea.com/research-inventory/)

Project summary information will be integrated into our developing Labelled Property Graph database so we can highlight synergies and identify gaps where future research might be focused. The quality of conservation and management outputs our collaboration can produce will be improved by capturing summary information from as wide a range of relevant research projects as possible.

If you are involved in a research project (current or planned) on wild Atlantic salmon , or where salmon relevant research may comprise a component of a bigger project , or feature in a work package , then we’d really like to hear from you. It will only take about 10 minutes maximum to complete the Project summary form accessible via the link below, and ensure that your research programmes are being included in this important inventory.
